The old series had a tradition of no sexual tension between the Doctor
and his companions, even though a disproportionate number of them were
female, attractive, and single. The new series has pretty much reversed
this, by making a new tradition of there usually being some kind of
sexual tension with at least one companion (with the exception of Donna).
The writers don't seem to believe that sexual tension between Clara and
the latest doctor would work, aesthetically, and I think they're right.
As a result, she suddenly acquires a boyfriend, and things start going
wrong between her and the Doctor, and the Doctor appears to be
auditioning a new companion.
They've hinted that her boyfriend's background has something strange in
it, and I don't think that they're going to drop him until that
"something" has been properly explored. If it weren't for that fact, I'd
think they were preparing us for Clara to leave the Doctor's life soon.
They could start and finish that exploration in a single episode, so I
might still be right about that.

Under Smith she did well. They accompanied each other .
Under Capaldi she get the kid treatment. Really
do the writers have it correct?
