"New" Theme Music?

With all the rumors going around about who is or isn't going to be
recording the "new theme tune" or "new theme song," I was just wondering
- has anybody involved with the production flat-out said that they won't
be using the Ron Grainer theme? Where does all this speculation *come*
from?

You'd think with all the money being poured into this production
(including the costly negotiations for use of the Daleks) that they'd go
all-out and get the rights to the classic Grainer theme from
Warner-Chappell.

Personally, I think they should not only stick with the Grainer theme,
they should use the Delia Derbyshire original. ALL other arrangements,
both good and bad, have ended up sounding dated. Derbyshire's is the
only one that's timeless, and this is why: There's absolutely nothing
whatsoever like it. Never has been, never will be. There was never a
"wobbly tones recorded on a tone generator" era of music. It doesn't
take you back to the early 80s like Peter Howell's New Wave-y
synthesizer arrangement, or to the late 80s like Dominic Glynn or Keff
McCulloch's "cheap electronic keyboard" arrangements.

The Derbyshire arrangement is timeless and weird and unearthly in a way
that no other arrangement has ever pulled off. Adding techno-beats (as
in "Shalka") or making it a grand John Williams-esque march (as in the
TVM) just roots it in a particular time and place. And the Doctor is
never rooted in any particular time or place...

You're absolutely right. Delia's is the only version worth listening
to, and the msot evocative. They'd be foolish not to use it.

And gets worse almsot every time. I quite liked the Peter Howell
version though, even if it is cheesy now.

Thanks for that - I hadn't even noticed there was a FAQ. I just noticed
people kept talking about the "new theme song" (rather than a new
arrangement of the tune) as if it was for sure that something brand-new
would have to be written. Hoorah.

No idea, but the BBC seem to have pulled the CD 'Resistance is Futile' from
their release schedule. I gather there are copyright issues surrounding the
theme tune and the new TV series...

I totally agree. It is, and always was, a major asset to the program.
sod the Daleks and the Tardis - it was in the bag before a word was spoken.

No. Everything from 1963 through 1979 (through Season 17) was some
variation on the Delia Derbyshire original. Peter Howell was Seasons
18-22 (Tom's final season, all of Davison, and Colin's first season).

I thought I read in the Outpost Gallifrey FAQ for the new series that they
were for shizzle going to use the Ron Grainer theme. Maybe I'll have to go
read it again...:-S

Keith

P.S. I'm sorry, I had to use the word 'shizzle' at least once.
