wasn't it an adlib by Tom? I seem to recall that it was called something

A real syndrome in which people have an irrational fear of humanoid robots
when they meet them? In the 1970s? Thinking before you type would be an
idea.

Grimwade was a production manager. Who know who Grimwald was,
and fear of robots may be legit.

Various internet resources suggest that it was in-joke set up by the
production team: Peter Grimwade was apparently known to complain about
working on so many robot related stories.
